Lately, there has been a lot of criticism of Israel as regard the Flotilla seeking to break the blockade of Gaza. I am not one who shirks from disagreeing with those I love and hold dear, and that includes Israel. To love means to being able to speak truth. Clearly, this was not their finest hour and there is good reason Israelis of many stripes voiced their concerns and caring opposition.
Â
At the same time, we ought to be vigilant about recognizing exactly what sort of people are sometimes placed on these ships and what the true or concurrent purpose is when those with suspicious ties where the guise of humanitarians. I have no doubt there are good people attempting to help good people. It is the other element that make use of good people or who manipulate those of goodwill to their own ends which spells danger to Israel.
Â
The United States would be poorer indeed if a strong and vibrant Israel is not there in the Middle East against what our country has already condemned as right wing elements bent on Israel’s destruction and harm to America. That might be a fine tightrope for us to walk at times, but walk it we must. We pray for peace and for men and women of goodwill everywhere to prevail over terror and intolerance. Shalom.
