Tasting Freedom: A powerful Passover workshop for the heart, mind, and palate! Â Â
Â
Passover is the quintessential holiday of liberation, elements of which can be found in Christianity, Buddhism, Islam and many other religious paths. At the core of the Biblical story about the Jews being freed from enslavement in ancient Egypt is the human search to free ourselves from the shackles not only of physical containment but that of the spirit. How do we allow ourselves to be enslaved in our everyday lives? To money, attitudes, status, to un-nourishing relationships, and straightjacket thinking? Conversely, how may we find and celebrate our ability to free ourselves from such confinement and give voice to inner freedom and creativity?
Â
The seder meal is the cornerstone of the Passover experience, an ordered meal in which poetry and stories and songs celebrate the age-old story and renew the spirit. Food especially prepared to convey a message and a meaning, is the focus of preparations. This workshop encourages Jews and non-Jews alike to experience first-hand through food and recipes, psychologically-based group dynamics and rabbinic teaching, the gratifying liberation of the ritual and rites of Passover. Through artistic, poetic, and organic re-imagining of the story and how it applies to our own lives, we will celebrate the significance of a holiday that speaks to our world in an ecumenical experience, oriented towards how we bring people together. For those who always wanted to experience a seder or the meaning of the holiday or to deepen their understanding of the holiday.
Â
The Hebrew word for that which makes bread rise, chametz, is also at the center of the psychology of the holiday. In the story, there was no time to let the bread rise before rushing away into freedom, hence matzah or flat-bread was utilized. We look at that which ‘leavens’ our lives and causes us to falsely give rise within us of traits that hold us back. Throughout the weekend, participants will utilize the natural beauty of Esalen to deepen their experience. Through the use of guided imagery, self-reflection, and mindfulness, the mind/body connection is explored, as we journey towards individual and group connection.
Â
A choice of breakout workshops include food preparation, artistic creation, guided relaxation offering participants a wide range of options as they fashion an individualized experience of personal meaning.
